If you dream of a luxurious Paris get away but your bank account doesn’t add up, there are ways to get a far-away adventure feeling closer to home for less money. There are many affordable alternatives to lavish destinations where travelers not only get more for their money, but there are less crowds and better perks and luxuries.
Paris, Madrid and Perth are still amazing places to vacation, but if you want to get the most out of your holiday, consider these closer-to-home hot spots.
Miami Instead of Hawaii
While a trip to Kauai, Hawaii, is a dream vacation for many, a budget-friendly alternative is Miami, Florida. Flights from most locations are about half the cost, and if you go between March and May, the temperatures are about the 70-degree to 80-degree range. Nightlight and restaurants are a big draw. The beaches in Miami are also alluring with a multitude of resorts many of which are family friendly. Families can also enjoy a nearby animal farm and zoo.
New Orleans Instead of Rio de Janeiro
The second largest Brazilian city is known for its carnival culture, exotic food, live music and spicy nightlife. This same environment can also be found in New Orleans, Louisiana, but for a lot less. For instance, Bourbon Street in New Orleans has everything one looking for this type of party-city vacation would want: Lively music, great food and lots to drink. It’s a great local alternative to Rio to letting loose and having uninhibited fun!
Quebec City Instead of Paris
Paris may be known as a romantic location for lovers, but those looking for a getaway to a romantic destination should also consider Quebec City. This quaint Canadian city located north of Maine and the rest of the Northeastern United States closely resembles a French village with cobblestone streets, castles and fortresses and many unique cafes, shops and French restaurants. Guests can see immediate savings on air flights as well as accommodations and food/drink. The primary language spoken in Quebec City is French.
Napa Valley Instead of Italy
While Italy is one of the top go-to international destinations these days, a trip to Napa Valley, California, may be a better choice for those counting their pennies. Located just north of San Francisco, the Napa Valley has one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, similar to what one can find in the rolling hills of Tuscany, Italy. When it comes to wine-tasting, while nothing truly beats the Italian experience, Napa Valley does have its share of winery estates and amazing architecture. Flights are definitely cheaper than those to Italy, and if you’re looking for domesticated family-friendly activities, Napa Valley is a better choice.
Solvang Instead of Denmark
For a taste of Danish culture and heritage without leaving the U.S., there’s no better destination than Solvang, California. Established in the early 20th century by a group of Danes wanting to create a Danish colony, Solvang has windmills, year-round Christmas stores and numerous artifacts from Hans Christian Anderson.
A copy of Copenhagen’s famous “Little Mermaid” statue sits in the town’s center. Solvang also has various Danish bakeries and restaurants.
Chicago Instead of Hong Kong
Vacationers looking for an amazing urban experience should travel no further than “The Windy City.” Hong Kong is a popular destination with year-round travelers looking for that exhilarating city experience. While there’s no doubt Hong Kong is exciting, it is also extremely crowded. Chicago, on the other hand, is also a bustling city with world-renowned architecture, art and food. Get many of the same experiences without having to travel to Asia.
