If your company offers paid time off (PTO), what is stopping you from using it to take an amazing vacation? Could it be the money? Traveling in the off-season is one of the best ways to save money on air fare, hotels, and venues. You’ll also avoid the crowds and enjoy more comfortable weather. The U.S. Travel Association found that 85 percent of workers who took PTO felt happier and less stress when they returned to work. Not only is taking a vacation beneficial for you, but it also benefits your employer.
Shoulder season is the best time to score a great deal. This is the period between the high and low season when prices drop, but the travel experience is still good. Here are some great destinations to check out:
You don’t just visit Colorado for the Rockies. Take advantage of the rafting, fishing and paved recreational paths. Enjoy the beautiful colors of fall on foot or by bike. It’s the perfect destination to be close to nature. At the end of your day, take a dip in their hot spring pools full of mineral rich water.
New Orleans, Louisiana
This iconic destination can be enjoyed any time of year. When you avoid booking around holidays and major events, you’ll bypass the crowds and high prices. In October, this entertainment hub may not have Mardi Gras going on, but you can check out the Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival, Film Festival or Deutsches Haus Oktoberfest.
This city is rich with history and culture. If you go in September through November, you’ll avoid the hot summer temperatures. Take advantage of the Film Festival in October or the Taste of Savannah in November. You can also stay at one of the many bed and breakfast inns at a lower rate.
Flights to Europe usually start going on sale in October. You’ll find that lodging rates have dropped and there is a larger variety of rooms available. Try some southern European cities since the weather will still be good up until mid-November. You’ll also discover that it will be surprisingly calm this time of year. The cruise ship crowds have left the Greek Islands and Turkey and the college students have gone home.
Beach destinations are very popular from mid-December through March, but if you go in the off-season you’ll avoid the crowds, enjoy nicer weather and lower rates. The Hawaiian islands are the perfect getaway. Experience 90 degree weather, paddleboarding, hiking, surfing and snorkeling
Costa Rica and Panama are great vacation destinations. From mid-October to mid-December, these places will be transitioning from the wet season to the dry season. Perfect timing for you to avoid the big crowds
Autumn is a good time to book affordable cruises because school is back in session and cruise ships are coming back from Alaska and Europe. Take a Canada cruise and enjoy New England, lobster bakes, ocean views, and onboard amenities.
