Summer beach days are the perfect inspiration for DIY projects. After all, there’s nothing better than spending the time and effort on a project and then actually using it. We’ve handpicked some of the best projects that you’ll want to use when you hit the beach this summer. These DIY projects are fast, easy, and many of them use things you probably already have; so let’s get crafting!
Revive Your Old Sunglasses with Some Colorful Thread Wrapping
Sunglasses are a must for any trip to the beach, but why settle for boring frames when you can add a burst of color with this simple thread wrapping project? All it takes is some embroidery floss or colorful thread, tape, clear glue, and a little patience.
To transform your tired old sunglasses into a cute pair of beach ready shades, cut some lengths of thread using any combination of colors you like. Take your first color and secure the thread to one arm of your frames. Tightly wrap the thread around the arm, covering the tape as you go. Repeat the process with each color and tie a knot to finish. Use a small dab of clear glue or clear nail polish to secure the knot in place.
Use an Old Sunscreen Bottle to Hold Keys
Keep your keys or other small valuables safe by cleaning out an old sunscreen bottle. Look for a bottle that’s a squared shape with a screw on lid, like Banana Boat Sport Performance. If you need to make the opening of the bottle large enough to fit your keys, money, or other small items use an X-Acto knife or box cutter and carefully cut the opening out, being sure to leave the threads that allow the lid to screw closed.
Personalize Your Beach Towel with a Little Bleach
You can easily personalize any beach towel with a little bleach and some creativity. All you need is a solid color beach towel, a spray bottle, water, beach, gloves, and stencils. Lay your towel on a bleach safe surface, like some scrap cardboard, and arrange your stencils however you want them to appear on your finished towel. Come up with a fun phrase, like “high tides, good times” or “sun, fun, and rum.”
Next, mix equal parts water to bleach in your spray bottle, put on some gloves and spray the bleach mixture over your stencils. Be careful to keep the bleach solution only in the areas you want the bleach to show and make sure you do this project in a well ventilated area (bleach fumes are strong). Let the bleach set for about 15 minutes and then rinse out the bleach in a large sink or bathtub and finish by throwing the towel in the wash. Once done, you’ll have a completely unique and stylish towel for lounging on the beach.
Transform an Inexpensive Straw Hat into Stylish Beachwear
A floppy straw hat is great for keeping the sun off your face while looking stylish at the beach. You can make an inexpensive straw hat look like you paid Kate Spade money with some sequin ribbon and a glue gun. Find a plain floppy straw hat, take a pencil and lightly write something beachy like “seas the day” or “beach vibes.” Using the hot glue gun, glue the sequin ribbon over your pencil marking until the sequin ribbon is securely attached and that’s it!
Make a No-Sew Tote Out of an Old T-Shirt
Turn an old t-shirt into a cute no-sew bag to bring your summer read, snacks, or water bottle with you to the beach. Start by cutting the arms off your t-shirt followed by widening the neck. This will make the handles for your bag. Next, cut strips about ¾ of an inch wide and 3 inches long at the bottom of the shirt. Finish by tying the strips together, pairing strips from the front of the shirt with strips in the back. For some hippy beach vibes, try using a tie dyed shirt and add some beads to the bottom tassels.
Before your next beach trip, try out one of these DIY projects. There sure to be just as fun as a day at the beach!
