As summer winds down, it’s time to start thinking about putting away the shorts and sun dresses and start planning for the cozier styles of fall. Rather than stick to the classic fall staples, like tall boots and puffer vests, consider trying some of this year’s must-have fall fashion trends. There are plenty of trends to add to your repertoire, but we’ve highlighted some of the biggest and most wearable to help you look on point this fall.
Pantsuits aren’t an ironic fashion statement this fall, but a full on power move. Perhaps thanks in part to Hillary Clinton and the Pantsuit Nation, Dior, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, and just about every major fashion house have embraced the pantsuit in their 2017 fall lineup. These aren’t your 1980’s working girl pantsuits but a totally modern take that can be sexy, powerful, and fashion forward.
Check “Yes” for Plaid
Warm plaids and classic gingham checks have long been a fall favorite but this year expect to see them everywhere. From pantsuits to overcoats, checks and plaids are a must-have. Look for pieces in fall colors, like burgundy and white gingham or gray plaid reminiscent of what you would see in menswear. You can kill two trends with one stone by going for a pantsuit in plaid.
The Bigger the Sweater, the Better
It wouldn’t feel like fall without some big, cozy knits and this year the bigger, the better. Oversized sweaters are trending, hallelujah! There are a lot of ways to style an oversized sweater. One of the most flattering way is to pair your sweater with a more fitted bottom, try skinny jeans or slim-fit trousers.
It’s Not Your Great Aunt Edna’s Floral Couch
Florals, the likes of what you’d find on your great aunt’s couch, are a must in your fall wardrobe. Instead of the bright pinks and magentas of the spring and summer, look for florals in fall colors, like deep burgundy, rust orange, and cinnamon brown, or muted colors. If you’re worried about looking too much like an upholstered piece of furniture, drape an oversized sweater over a clingy floral dress and you’ll take the “couch” out of your chic look.
If you’re one of the fashion adventurous, the deconstructed look may be just the bold statement you’ve been looking for. The deconstructed look is exactly what it sounds like, clothes that look like they have been randomly taken apart, kind of like the scene in Cinderella where her stepsister rip her dress to pieces. This can be a hard style to wear confidently, so instead, consider using it as inspiration and go for a dress with one exaggerated ruffled sleeve.
Whether you wear these looks as is or use them as inspiration, you’re sure to look hot as the weather cools this fall. What are your favorite fall trends for 2017?
